Wildland fires in the northwest continue to present variable and sometimes unhealthy Air Quality Index levels for Harney County.

When planning outdoor activities consider this:
  • If visibility distance is under 5 miles: The air quality is generally unhealthy for young children, adults over age 65, pregnant women, and people with heart and/or lung disease, asthma or other respiratory illness. These people should minimize outdoor activity.
  • If visibility distance is under 3 miles: The air quality is unhealthy for everyone. Young children, adults over age 65, pregnant women, and people with heart and/or lung disease, asthma or other respiratory illness should avoid all outdoor activities.
  • If visibility distance under 1 mile: The air quality is very unhealthy, and in some cases may be hazardous. Everyone should avoid all outdoor activities.
  • Oregon DEQ has an AQI monitoring station in Burns which monitors hourly Air Quality Index levels for the local area. You can access the Burns AQI data (station 31016) at http://www.deq.state.or.us/lab/aqm/rt/rtHourlyConc.aspx.
