Harney County Emergency Management & Preparedness
450 North Buena Vista
Burns, Oregon
Tel: 541-589-2423 (24x7 Cell)

For Immediate Release

Wildland fires in the northwest continue to present variable and sometimes unhealthy Air Quality Index levels for Harney County.

When planning outdoor activities consider this:
  • If visibility distance is under 5 miles: The air quality is generally unhealthy for young children, adults over age 65, pregnant women, and people with heart and/or lung disease, asthma or other respiratory illness. These people should minimize outdoor activity.
  • If visibility distance is under 3 miles: The air quality is unhealthy for everyone. Young children, adults over age 65, pregnant women, and people with heart and/or lung disease, asthma or other respiratory illness should avoid all outdoor activities.
  • If visibility distance under 1 mile: The air quality is very unhealthy, and in some cases may be hazardous. Everyone should avoid all outdoor activities.
  • Oregon DEQ has an AQI monitoring station in Burns which monitors hourly Air Quality Index levels for the local area. You can access the Burns AQI data (station 31016) at http://www.deq.state.or.us/lab/aqm/rt/rtHourlyConc.aspx.

  1. Burns AQI data link from ODEQ is not correct. Leads to a facebook exit page. Can this be fixed?
