Air Quality Report from Deception Complex 9/13/2014

Yesterday, continual control and mop up fire operations designed to keep fie in the box on the western perimeter.  Another active fire behavior day in the interior, producing a generous amount of emission; however, good ventilation during the day and elevated nighttime winds prevented smoke from pooling. The Westfir and Oakridge, monitors recorded moderate levels of PM over night and early morning for only a short period. By midafternoon today, air quality improves to the good range.  Air quality will start to improve after the morning inversion break.
Today’s smoke will transport to the east with the winds transitioning to the west in afternoon.  The combination of warm temperatures and dry conditions, the likely of increase fire behavior will enhance smoke production.  However, with high mixing heights and strong transport winds, we can expect good smoke dispersion. We forecast the morning air quality to reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” in Westfir as smoke vents down the Deception Creek drainage, and “Moderate” for Oakridge.  There may be light haze in Oakridge and lake Waldo in the afternoon, but should clear by early evening.
