Deception Complex Air Quality Report Sunday 9/14/2014

Yesterday, continual control and mop up fire operations designed to keep fie in the box on the western perimeter.  Another active fire behavior day in the interior, producing a generous amount of emission; however, good ventilation during the day and elevated nighttime winds prevented smoke from pooling. The Westfir and Oakridge, monitors recorded moderate levels of PM over night and early morning for only a short period. Around 12:00 smoke rolled into the Middle Fork for a short period, air quality was in the “unhealthy” level. Air quality improved to moderate by early evening.
Today’s smoke will transport to the east in the morning, the winds will transition to the west in afternoon.  The combination of warm temperatures and dry conditions, fire behavior will enhance interior smoke production.  However, with high mixing heights and strong transport winds, we can expect good smoke dispersion. We forecast the morning air quality to reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” in Westfir as smoke vents down the Deception Creek drainage, and “Moderate” for Oakridge. Air quality in the early afternoon may reach the “Unhealthy  for a short period clearing to” Moderate” by early evening. There may be “moderate” AQI in Oakridge and light haze over lake Waldo in the afternoon, but should clear by early evening.
