Oregon State Smoke Forecast for Monday Aug. 28, 2017

Issued:  Aug. 27, 2017
Forecaster.  R. Graw, USDA Forest Service

Monday will be characterized by a change in winds between the morning and early evening. The day will start with easterly winds over much of the fires, bringing the smoke westward as shown in Figure 1 below. The map should be interpreted in a relative rather than absolute sense such that area of darker red indicate areas of heavier smoke, and pink indicates areas of light smoke. Much of the Willamette Valley and the northern coast will remain free of smoke, as will much of Central and Eastern Oregon.

However, around 5 p.m., the winds will shift, out of the west, causing much of the smoke to impact areas east of the fires. This will bring some relief to the Southern Oregon coast and the southern portion of  the Willamette Valley, but smoky conditions to areas along the eastern side of the Cascades in Southern and Central Oregon, as illustrated in Figure 2. As always, please refer to the individual smoke forecasts associated with the fires for more details in specific locations. These forecasts are provided by the Air Resource Advisors and are posted to this blog
