Oregon Smoke Information

Map Notes:

The map above is not able to show all state air quality monitors. To see the whole set, go to the left column, under Hot Links
and click on DEQ Air Quality map which will bring up a map with many additional state monitors. Round icons represent permanent state air quality monitors, triangular icons represent temporary smoke monitors (when deployed).

Dispatch from the Coast -- Florence on a Sunday Afternoon

Our forecaster is working on an updated air quality forecast as I write this. In the meantime, here's a look at Florence around 1 p.m. It's hazy here and we saw some haze on the drive up from Bandon this morning. Loads better than the conditions in many other parts of the state, but still seeing the impacts from wildfires here.

We're getting quite a few questions about what air quality is like on the coast as people prepare for Labor Day travel. A lot of these areas don't have air quality monitors -- those tend to be concentrated in more populous areas that generally have worse air quality. So here's a reminder to use the 5-3-1 visibility index when you can't access current air quality data.

Thanks again to all the commenters who are sharing information and asking questions. We know a lot of you are dealing with some pretty tough conditions right now. Remember to check here for updated air quality forecasts, fire-specific smoke forecasts and health guidance.

  2. We went to Newport early in the day and there no evidence of smoky air. We worked our way South to Florence in the evening. Heading home to Creswell via Hwy. 126, it was very smoky from a few miles East of Florence all the way home. It was much worse than when we left Sunday morning.

  3. Does anyone know how bad the smoke is in Eugene around River Road?

    1. All of Eugene is still quite bad as of this morning (as in view is hazy merely looking at objects across the street). We are currently riding the line between "very unhealthy" and "hazardous".

  4. It's thick like fog. Yesterday morning I could see 4 blocks on River Road before the smoke closed in. You can see the smoke in the neighborhood

  5. Is anyone at the coast this morning, around Florence, Yachats or Newport? Wondering how the air is there, today.

    1. I live in Florence. As of 11:19, it is hazy and the air smells smoky, but not as bad as it appears closer to Eugene. An elderly friend just left town because the smoke was making her sick - she's headed north. I am staying inside. I hope people don't start BBQing today.

  6. We live in Springfield... Do you think dogs are alright playing on beach in Florence today? Meaning air quality?

    1. Sorry for the delay. I hope you saw the comment from a local above. I was in Florence earlier. It was hazy but much better than Springfield. Saw tons of dogs. They all seemed to be having a grand time. But I have a senior dog and have been keeping him inside to be safe.
